Porsche Cayman GT4 (981, 2015-2019) review – design

The Cayman we've all been waiting for

Evo rating
Price
from £64,451
  • Looks; attitude; exquisite chassis balance; price; 'that' manual gearbox
  • Gear ratios still feel too long; they've all been sold

If you’ve never been keen on the current-generation Cayman then the GT4 might be the car to change your mind. With its adoption of GT3-style features, the GT4 takes on an aggressive side we’ve so far been denied of the Cayman nameplate – the old Cayman R looks positively anaemic in comparison.

Your eyes will first be drawn to the 20in alloy wheels, near-identical in style to those on the 911 GT3. Next you’ll clock the deeper front splitter and its aerodynamic twin sprouting from the rear deck on beautifully-wrought supports.

No more subtle are the large side intakes, dilated to feed more air to the 3.8-litre engine, and the rear diffuser, which stretches nearly the full width of the rear apron and conceals a pair of centrally-mounted tailpipes.

Importantly, the overall effect isn’t quite as attention-seeking as that of the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS. The Cayman is still a relatively small car, neatly proportioned and quietly confident.
