Volkswagen Tiguan R spied – mid-sized SUV to feature Golf R powertrain

VW’s performance SUV range to continue expanding with a hot Tiguan R

It’s been a couple of years since we last saw Volkswagen testing a high-performance version of the Tiguan SUV, but it looks like the plan is back on track going by these new images of what will likely become the Tiguan R.

Despite this prototype’s bodywork being familiar from the standard Tiguan in R-Line trim, it is the quad oval exhaust outlets – as one might see on both the Golf R and T-Roc R – that likely make this a performance version in testing. We suspect that it’ll share the same 296bhp EA888 engine with both of the aforementioned R models, and likewise a combination of a Haldex all-wheel-drive system and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

To go alongside the increase in power, we suspect that Volkswagen will also retune the suspension with a likely inclusion of adaptive dampers, as an option at least. Peer carefully behind the 20-inch rims on this prototype and you’ll also spot a chunkier set of brakes.

The Tiguan is based on the same MQB foundations as the Golf and T-Roc, making the fitment of the high-output EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine relatively easy, without any need for major chassis manipulation required.

Using the T-Roc R as a guide, we also suspect that the Tiguan R will gain some updated exterior styling, which might coincide with the release of the Tiguan’s mid-life refresh, which is due next year. As the standard Tiguan R-Line is already available with the 237bhp biturbo diesel that is found in the Skoda Kodiaq vRS, it’s unlikely that the Tiguan R will drink from the black pump, too.

With the standard Tiguan already topping out at over £41k in top specifications, we suspect that the R may well reach a price in the mid-£40,000s, making this a steep jump in price compared with a Golf R or Cupra Ateca, with which it shares many of its mechanicals
