Skoda Octavia unveiled

Skoda's next-generation Golf rival has been unveiled. Pictures and details here.

Skoda has pulled the wraps off the next-generation of its class-straddling Octavia, which has grown 90mm in size over its predecessor – maintaining the car’s above-average size for Golf-class money.

These images show that the Octavia has adopted similar styling to the new Rapid, including the new range-wide Skoda front end. A full range of petrol and diesel engines will be offered from launch including the super-economical 1.6 TDI GreenLine, which is capable of a claimed 83mpg and 89g/km of CO2. 1.4 and 1.8-litre TSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI engines will also be offered.

The new car is expected to appear in Spring 2013, with similar prices to the current model. evo readers might be pleased to hear that Skoda is planning a new vRS model, with the Golf GTI’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, to come a few months after the launch of the standard car.

Despite the added size, the new Octavia is actually just over 100kg lighter than the current model, which Skoda says is down to the use of lightweight materials, and the use of high-tensile steel in key areas of the body.

Both six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmissions will be available, and Skoda claims to be working on an all-wheel-drive option.
