New Peugeot 308 hatchback revealed

Peugeot reveals its updated 308 hatchback, SW and CC ahead of its 2011 Geneva motor show launch

Peugeot has pulled the covers off a facelifted 308 ahead of UK sales in May. Of most interest to us is the range-topping GT THP 200 model, available in hatchback and drop-top CC guise. Like the outgoing GT – and the top-spec RCZ coupe – the GT trim gets a 200bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Peugeot’s UK arm didn’t put a GTI badge on the original 308, and hasn’t changed strategy with the updated model, the most potent new 308 remaining a GT rather than hauling the weight of expectation that goes with the full-fat GTI moniker. In the main it’s a visual makeover, the most noticeable changes at the front-end, where LED headlamps and daytime running lights – now an EU-directed necessity –give a nod to the bigger 508 and SR1 Concept. Peugeot has also majored on making the updated 308 cleaner and more efficient, with all eight petrol and diesel units Euro V compliant, and stop-start technology available, too. Weight has also been pared down across the range, with an average of 25kg saved across all models.  The new 308 will officially launch at the 2011 Geneva motor show in March and goes on sale in the UK in May, prices kicking off at £15,245. The range topping GT model starts at £22,445, with a spec including 18in alloy wheels, panoramic roof, half-leather sports seats, and the usual array of electronic driver aids as standard.
