evo tester aims for world drift record

Friend of evo, Mauro Calo, aims for the world drift record in a Mercedes C63 AMG saloon

The world’s longest car drift record is set to be broken this Sunday. Mauro Calo, friend of evo and one of our associate road testers, will aim for a 10,000ft (nearly two miles) continuous drift, via 12 laps of the perimeter track at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands, Surrey. A Guinness World Record adjudicator will be present to officially verify any record breaking. It differs from other drift records in that it’s on dry tarmac with no low-grip ‘aids’ to assist the drift. The car will be a completely unmodified, production spec Mercedes C63 AMG, with an equally standard E63 AMG as a back up. The lack of a slide-friendly surface won’t be the only challenge facing Mauro, though. ‘The track’s not a uniform circle, so I’ll be making very regular adjustments to keep the car sliding’ he says. ‘I’m going to be quite busy in there!’ The track is also incredibly narrow, its width almost equal to the Merc sports saloon’s length. With a surrounding gravel trap, accuracy is absolutely key with no room for error. As a result, a Guinness-recognised precision driving record could be on the cards too. So is Mauro nervous? ‘I’ve already done it and broken the record a few times in practice. I’m very confident’. If you’d like to see the attempt take place, head to Mercedes-Benz world for around 2pm this Sunday, June 19. And come back to evo.co.uk on Monday for news from Mauro.
