Updated 2019 Mercedes E-class spied – to rival new A6 and 5-series
Merc’s E-class executive saloon and estate are coming up to their mid-life refresh
Right on time, the Mercedes E-class has been spied testing before its debut later this year. Likely to combine a selection of detail styling, tech and chassis upgrades, it should help safeguard the E-class’s success against executive rivals such as the Audi A6 and BMW 5-series.
Immediately obvious are the new nose and tail designed to more closely align the E-class to newer models in the range. The front section will see new, smaller headlights, with a shape more reminiscent of that seen on the AMG GT 4-Door, GLE and new CLA. The grille, although hidden away in these images, will likely also switch over to the downturned shape as seen in those models, judging by the dramatically reshaped headlights.

The tail is also due a substantial change, with a possible re-shaping of the rear lights, now spreading onto the boot lid as in the estate, coupe and convertible. Look closely at these images and you might spot this test car’s boot is without any lighting elements on it, but look to the left side of the number plate holder and you’ll see a makeshift reverse light – a telltale sign the production boot lid will also house lighting elements.
The body-in-white looks unchanged though, as is the case with a majority of mid-life facelifts, but the changes still look more substantial than those recently applied to the smaller C-class.
Inside, expect the dashboard to remain largely the same in shape and detail, but with the adoption of new Mercedes infotainment software introduced on the A-class, and a revised touchpad input method replacing the current scroll-wheel. A new steering wheel is also on the cards, incorporating the different controls for that new infotainment system.
Changes under the bonnet remain unknown, but as most of the engine range has recently gone through the WLTP emissions testing, we’d expect the revised engines slowly introduced to the E-class range over the last 12 months to remain – including the new straight-six E400d and AMG E53 models.
We’re not expecting the new E-class to arrive in time for the Geneva motor show, with a reveal some time after summer the most likely scenario.
