BBR Mazda MX-5 (ND) launched with 250bhp supercharger kit

The Mazda MX-5 ND is one of the finest back-to-basics sports cars on the market, to which BBR has added a supercharger

Brackley-based BBR GTi has been fettling Mazda MX-5s for the past four decades, and its latest creation is a two-stage supercharger kit for the latest-generation ND model. Having been in development since 2015, the kit is available on all 2-litre SkyActiv-G cars built between 2015 and 2019, with BBR currently working on the same for the updated 181bhp car built from 2019. Prices for the supercharger kit start from £3895.

The entry point for the BBR upgrade is the stage one kit, increasing output by a substantial 68bhp and 52lb ft to 225bhp and 200lb ft. The result is a strong 5.3sec 0-62mph time, 1.8sec quicker than the standard car. The kit includes a C30-94 Rotrex supercharger, a new oil reservoir, BBR's own oil cooler, front mounted intercooler, ‘Starchip EcuTek’ ECU tune and a K&N induction kit.

A stage two upgrade sees boost pressure remain the same for longevity, with improved flow the source of the additional power. To achieve this, BBR fabricates a 2.5-inch bore high flow stainless steel exhaust system featuring a sports catalyst, 4-1 manifold and high flow rear silence. The result is a new output of 250bhp and 220lb ft of torque, up 93bhp and 72lb ft over a standard MX-5, which is good for a quoted 5.1sec 0-62mph time.

Throughout the development process, BBR paid close attention to supercharger oil and intake temperatures to ensure reliability and consistent power delivery. Should you plan on pushing it to the limit on track though, an optional Forge Motorsport intercooler can also be added to the package.

To keep the installation simple and retain a near-OEM engine bay appearance, the package is designed to be installed without intrusive mechanical alterations. BBR’s Neil Mckay said: 'Opting for the Rotrex supercharger enables BBR’s most straightforward forced induction install to date, meaning that it is well within the capabilities of most DIY mechanics and easy for any professional.'

Prices start from £3895 for stage one hardware, with the price rising to £4795 fully fitted by BBR. Opt for stage two and you’ll pay £5395 for hardware or £6495 including installation. For peace of mind, both packages come with a handy 12-month warranty.
